The AfroFuture Fest is scheduled to take place on August 3-4 in Detroit, Michigan. While a music festival catering to Black tastes is nothing new, the pricing scheme they had planned was rather “progressive,” with White people being charged twice as much as POC (“people of color” aka non-Whites).
There were free tickets for non-Whites that were already given away, so then non-Whites could purchase early bird tickets for $10, while White people would have to pay $20 for those same tickets. If the tickets were purchased at a later date, the prices would increase to $20 for non-Whites and $40 for Whites.
The reasoning for the unequal pricing was explained in the FAQ section of their website.
Why do we have POC (people of colour) and Non-POC (white people) tickets? I’m glad you asked! Equality means treating everyone the same.
Wait a minute! They are literally treating people differently based on skin color while claiming to be treating everyone the same.
Equity is insuring [sic] everyone has what they need to be successful. Our ticket structure was built to insure [sic] that the most marginalised communities (people of colour) are provided with an equitable chance at enjoying events in their own community (black Detroit).”
Let’s say I organize a music festival somewhere in the Appalachian mountains, where there are lots of poor White people, and charge non-Whites twice as much to get in – do you think there would be an uproar? You better believe it!
Some people have been outraged over the discriminatory pricing structure, including a biracial female rapper named Tiny Jag, one of the musicians who was slated to perform. In an interview with Detroit Metro Times she said:
I was immediately enraged just because I am biracial. I have family members that would have, under those circumstances, been subjected to something that I would not ever want them to be in … especially not because of anything that I have going on.”
She not only took exception because some of her family would face discrimination, but because she does not think such a policy will lead toward a better future for anyone.
It’s non-progressive and it’s not solution-focused in my eyes… It seems almost like it has spite, and unfortunately with spite comes hate, and that’s just not obviously going to be a good direction for us to go if we’re looking for positive change.”
Tiny Jag insisted her name be removed from any promotional material associated with the AfroFuture music festival after pulling out.
This music festival’s original pricing structure, while certainly discriminatory against White people, appears to also be illegal according to US law. In the Civil Rights Act of 1964 Title II it states:
All persons shall be entitled to the full and equal enjoyment of the goods, services, facilities, and privileges, advantages, and accommodations of any place of public accommodation, as defined in this section, without discrimination or segregation on the ground of race, colour, religion, or national origin.”
Places of public accommodation include “any motion picture house, theatre, concert hall, sports arena, stadium or other place of exhibition or entertainment,” which means that the AfroFuture Fest is almost certainly violating the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
However, the ACLU or SPLC did not step in to bring legal action against the organizers, since White people are not afforded the same rights as everyone else in this country. Mary Frances Berry, former Chairwoman of the US Commission on Civil Rights, once stated:
Civil rights laws were not passed to protect the rights of white men and do not apply to them.”
Now it appears that civil rights laws are not in place to protect either White men or White women, and that we are now considered second class citizens. This is supposedly “progress” according to genocidal anti-Whites.
After receiving a lot of press coverage, with this story even getting featured on the Drudge Report, organizers have decided to stop requiring White people pay twice as much, citing threats from “White supremacists” and the desire to shield children from “racist” comments. I have a feeling they might have become concerned about the legal ramifications of violating the Civil Rights Act, though.
For the safety of our community, family, elders who received threats from white supremacists,& youth who were subjected to seeing racist comments on our IG pg,Afrofuture Fest has changed our ticketing model to $20 General Admission & suggested donation for nonPOC on @eventbrite
Now White people will just be expected to fork over an extra “donation” when entering the festival. Most will likely do so, due either to intimidation or feelings of White guilt. I don’t know why they would even want to be there in the first place, to be honest.
