Poll: Right-Wing Vlaams Belang Largest Party in Belgium

A fresh poll has revealed that the national populist Vlaams Belang (Flemish Interest) party is now the most popular party in Belgium.
According to the latest opinion poll from Belgian media, if national elections were held today, the right-wing party would garner 24.9 percent of the vote, making it the largest party of Belgium, HLN reports.
The second-largest party, with 22.7 percent of the vote, was the conservative New Flemish Alliance party, followed by the Open Vld party with 13.3 percent of the vote. The centrist CD&V and the leftist Green party each garnered about 11 percent of the vote.
Despite coming in second place in Belgium’s 2019 federal elections, with nearly 12 percent of the vote, Vlaams Belang was shut out from government negotiations. The move to exclude Vlaams Belang from taking part in government talks seems to have only energized the right-wing populist party’s base.
Last week, Vlaams Belang revealed its “missie 2024” program during a meeting in Ghent.
Here the party unveiled its new slogan, “Het enige alternatiel” (the only alternative).
During the unveiling of their new political program, the party’s president Tom Van Griekan slammed the “cordon sanitaire”, the agreement between the country’s center-right and center-left parties which rule out any cooperation with the rising national populist party.
