Trump’s ‘worst two days’: Reporter explains how the shutdown is spiraling out of president’s control

Toronto Star reporter Daniel Dale, who has earned widespread acclaim for his real-time fact checks of President Donald Trump’s speeches, said on Thursday that the past two days have been absolutely brutal for President Donald Trump.
Writing on Twitter, Dale asked whether these have been the “worst two days of the shutdown for Trump,” before proceeding to list off all the political calamities that have befallen the president since Tuesday.
“Public complaints from FBI agents, former DHS chiefs and Coast Guard commandant,” Dale wrote. “Tone-deaf [statements on the shutdown by Secretary of Commerce Wilbur] Ross; terrible poll numbers out; Pelosi wins speech standoff; first official defections from Senate GOP.”

During an earlier appearance on MSNBC, Dale also argued that the multiple clueless statements by Trump officials about the impact of the shutdown show that the White House lacks a coherent messaging strategy for its own self-inflicted crisis.

“There’s no messaging plan,” Dale said. “The president thought that simply talking over and over about the scariness of illegal immigrants, talking about crime, would be enough to somehow win this battle. But he’s, I think, missed the other part of the communications picture, which is empathy.”
